Lansing City Police Receive Lesbian/Gay Community Awareness Training

by L.A.H.R. (Lansing Assoc.

for Human Rights)

In a historic first step in relations between Lansing City Police and the representatives of the Lansing area's lesbian/gay male community, community awareness training for Lansing's peace officers was recently started to ensure sensitivity to the concerns of lesbians and gay males.

The training session consisted of a presentation on gay, hispanic, and black concerns and included a discussion about

the way to improve dealings between these

groups and law enforcement officials. Individual officer concerns were dealt with in a significant question and answer session which followed.

A training bulletin provided at the session by LAHR covers such issues as: the past stigmatization of gay people and the risks of openness; the lack of private meeting places; the rise of gay selfacceptance and gay institutions; and the drive to secure fair treatment from police. Prepared by the City of Chicago, the bulletin details those crimes which involve

lesbians and gays more often or less often than with the majority of the public. Lastly, it urges police officers to remember that true professionalism means not to be biased, not to use condescending attitudes, and to recognize the duty to serve and protect all people.

The training sessions are the result of a meeting with Lansing City Mayor Terry McKane by LAHR Communications Officer Gary Zick and Robert. Lundy, MOHR's Legislation Officer. The meeting was in response to previous correspondence between the parties.

The format for the training was agreed upon in a meeting and a subsequent telephone conversation between Mr. Zick and Mr. Richard Letts, Director of Lansing's Human Relations Department.

A second training session is scheduled for November.

B.W.M.T. Housewarming a Success

It was standing room only in the Peacock Room of The Glass House when the Detroit chapter of B.W.M.T. (Black and White Men Together) held its monthly business meetings at the popular lounge on Detroit's SixMile strip.

The Glass House is the new meeting place for B.W.M.T. Detroit, and guests from the larger Detroit gay community, as well as two members from the Chicago chapter, were on hand to help the fledgling interracial organization celebrate its first meeting at The Glass House in style.

The business meeting was followed by a presentation by Dwight Cendrowski from the Detroit Area Nuclear Weapons Freeze, advocating the passage of Proposition E. Then the
